C-Section Birth Stories: Alyssa Lane

1. Briefly, please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

I had a rough pregnancy with constant nausea and heartburn resulting in losing over 20 pounds in the first two trimesters. On the outside, I never looked how far along I really was, which concerned my OB, but we kept monitoring with ultrasounds to check on my baby’s progress. Everything was still on track until my 37-week appointment. I was measuring now two weeks behind, so I was sent for an ultrasound to see if my fluid levels were on track. They were not, as my levels were at a 3 (average is 8 to 20). I was hospitalized overnight to try to bring them up but had no luck. I was induced, but with all the stress and anxiety my body would shut down and they were unable to check my cervix. After 48 hours of different induction methods, a failed epidural, and no change with my body, they decided a c-section was the best option for my health and for my boy’s safety.

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

I was nervous after the previous events but the staff made the experience better. My body had rejected the epidural so they used a spinal. It only numbed my legs though and not my abdomen, which resulted in having to be put to sleep. I remember them telling me to take deep breaths and the next thing I knew, I was waking up in a recovery room. The hardest part was having to wait almost an hour while the anesthesia wore off before I could see my baby.

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

My husband was my rock. It was hard for us with the events that had transpired and having a brand new life to care for but he was a huge help. Both our families did everything they could to help out!

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

Take it slow afterward. You just had major surgery and grew a human for the last 9 months. It’s ok to cry and let people help you! The pain does lessen and don’t forget to take your pain meds! The doctor gave them to you for a reason. :)

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

I realized how strong and powerful my body is. I’ve always had a negative body image of myself but this changed that. Yes, I have a scar and I may not have my flat stomach, but when I look at my boy, it’s all worth it. Through all of it, I’ve learned that I can depend on others and that it’s ok because I’m a superwoman.
