C-Section Birth Stories: Bella Waters-Franklin
1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):
I went in on Monday, October 25th for an ultrasound and to get my membrane sweep for the second time. We were ready to head out when the doctor stopped us and said that my fluid was low and I needed to be induced. I was excited to meet my daughter a week early. I didn’t know anything about c-sections. I wanted to have an unmedicated birth but the doctors said that my uterus and cervix were swollen and the baby wouldn’t fit through. That’s when the next day I was told it was best to have a c-section. I was nervous and said I felt like my body failed me. After seeing my daughter, I felt so much better knowing that these doctors have done many c-sections before mine.
2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:
I didn’t know anything about having a c-section. I was surprised to learn that it wasn’t as scary for me as people make it seem. However, it is important to be educated on c-sections because you never know if it could happen to you and you want to be prepared for different types of birth.
3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:
The doctor that performed my surgery was very positive, friendly, and excited for me. I felt like it wasn’t a big deal that my abdomen was being cut open because things seemed calm and mellow. I was the one who was nervous. My husband was by my side, supporting me, and it made me feel so much better.
4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:
Breathe, don’t tense up, think about how your amazing body created a tiny human being, think about how you’ve waited nine months and now your baby will be meeting you in minutes. Personally, I thought about how the scar that I’d have represented the love for my baby just like Jesus has scars on his hands and feet that represent His love for us and what He did for us.
5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:
I am emotionally and mentally still recovering from my c-section because I had no idea and it took me by surprise. Remember that it’s fine to cry, to be upset if you weren’t expecting a c-section, and to take your time. Also, don’t forget that little baby of yours is safe and so are you. Don’t be harsh on yourself; you are so much more than a scar and a c-section is bringing a human life into the world and that is birth.
