C-Section Birth Stories: Celine Denton
1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):
I had a healthy pregnancy all throughout and everything seemed fine. My water broke at 39 weeks and 3 days. My husband and I went to the hospital excited and nervous. Unfortunately, this was all during COVID and I had to go up to labor and delivery by myself. Once I checked in, my husband was able to come up. When I was admitted, I was only dilated to 1 centimeter with irregular contractions. I was put on Pitocin, but my contractions continued to be irregular and I wasn’t progressing very much. 36 hours later, I was stuck at 8 1/2 centimeters. I had a fever, the baby’s heart rate was elevated, and there was meconium. My husband and I knew a c-section was best, but we were waiting on my Covid results because that was the deciding factor if my husband would be allowed in the operating room. Luckily, I tested negative and we told the doctor we wanted to move forward with the c-section. I was terrified. I had the shakes and was throwing up before my surgery. Once I was numb and they were ready, the fear intensified. I didn’t plan for a c-section so I wasn’t emotionally ready. My husband and the hospital staff were a wonderful support system throughout, and I finally calmed down once I saw my sweet boy.
2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:
I always heard the recovery period was intense, but it was a lot worse than I expected. However, it showed me how strong I really am.
3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:
My husband, family, and friends got me through my postpartum period. I mourned the vaginal birth I didn’t have and went through feelings of grief and guilt because I told myself I failed at giving birth. My support system helped me realize that I SUCCEEDED in giving birth - that I not only gave birth but recovered from major surgery, and that I was already a wonderful mother. Accepting my c-section 3 months later is still a work in progress, but it’s getting better each day.
4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:
Don’t let the traditional views of giving birth deter you from feeling like your birth story doesn’t matter.
5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:
Absolutely. I rock my scar as a reminder that I can overcome anything.
