C-Section Birth Stories: Haley Erwin

1. Briefly, please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

My baby boy was quite content sitting in the frank breech position for nearly my entire pregnancy. At my 36 week appointment, my ultrasound showed he also had his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. Both my OB and I were not comfortable trying to flip him and decided to schedule my c-section between 38-39 weeks. This was my first pregnancy and I was not expecting to have a c-section at all!

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

There were so many things that I didn’t know or expect before, during, or after my c-section. During my pre-op, they asked if I had scoliosis or any back issues. I do have a slight curve to my back which made administering my spinal block difficult. They had to try four times before they got it. I also didn’t know my husband would not be allowed in the room until it was showtime! I also wasn’t expecting to bleed after my procedure. The whole process was a lot faster than I expected too! Another thing I did not expect was to have an allergic reaction to what my belly was prepped/washed with for my surgery. After several trips back to the doctor we found a regime to help clear up my hives. The reaction has been the hardest part of my recovery.

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

I gave birth at a military hospital (they aren’t always known for having the best care), but my nurses were amazing. They were extremely supportive, educated me, and cared for me during my stay at the hospital. My husband has also been able to stay at home with me since I gave birth and he has been an all-star daddy! As a military family we live very far from family and friends but they have been extremely supportive and helpful, listening to me and texting me for updates daily. I’m excited for them to come visit soon!

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

You got this. A c-section can seem scary, especially if it’s due to complications with your pregnancy. Your body and mind are more resilient than you will ever know. Ask ALL the questions you have before and after your surgery - the medical staff is there to help you and educate you. You’ll also be surprised to watch your modesty fly out the window following your operation. Take as much time as you and your body need to recover. Make time for yourself every day (even if it’s for a half hour) - I love and look forward to my nightly showers.

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

I was very scared about my procedure beforehand but it wasn’t that bad. When I found out I was pregnant my baby was the size of a poppy seed and now I have a sweet baby boy at home. Every hardship has been worth it. I’m amazed and proud of what my body has accomplished over these last nine months. Although having a c-section wasn’t what I had envisioned for my pregnancy everything turned out perfectly.
