C-Section Birth Stories: Jasmine Visic

1. Briefly, please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

Our son was delivered via an emergency c-section and it was one of the most beautiful but traumatic moments in my life. I was in natural labour for 20 hours when my cervix started to swell and the baby had become obstructed. I went into the c-section calm and relaxed as I knew I was in safe hands. Our son was born crying and perfectly healthy. The delivery was calm and beautiful. In the moments after our delivery, my husband and son were removed from the room. I had suffered a major hemorrhage and uterine atony losing over 2 liters of blood. My husband had no idea if I was ok until I was brought into recovery 3 hours later. I didn’t get to hold or meet my son until the next day. I am so grateful for my husband, as he was there for our son during his first moments when I couldn’t be. Even though I had complications post c-section, I am thankful as my son was born unharmed and healthy.

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

When they say do not lift anything heavier than your baby...it’s true. I definitely underestimated the recovery process. I would definitely have a scheduled c-section for our next pregnancy.

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

I have always been an extremely independent person and struggled with asking for help. Having a c-section meant I needed to depend on others to help me. I have been so blessed to have a supportive husband and family to care for me. I also sought out support in terms of counseling to help come to terms with our delivery.

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

It’s ok to feel blissfully happy but sad at the same time. In the first weeks after Emmett’s arrival, I cried everyday; sometimes a few times a day. I was on cloud nine but also healing from major trauma. Be open with how you feel, no one will judge you for being human. Postpartum depression is real - surround yourself with positive energy and do not be ashamed to seek help.

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

Having c-section has taught me a sense of resilience. Through the emotional and physical pain, nothing would stop me from embracing motherhood and enjoying my son.
