C-Section Birth Stories: Kathryn Lanier

1. Briefly, please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

I had not felt the baby move in 24 hours. I was having heavy bleeding and I started immediately (with no lead-up) having contractions at 2.5 to 3 minutes apart. My baby’s heart rate was through the roof (I was 39.4 weeks). I labored the first 5 hours through transition-like contractions and the doctors called it and I had my life-saving surgery. My baby had developed infections in the womb, was flown to another hospital and fought for his life for 40 days. BUT HE LIVED AND IS THRIVING thanks to this surgery!

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

How quick they can get a baby out and how much having positive people around you can empower you! Also, how much you shake afterward!

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

I had lots of different help - some actually helpful, some very sweet but added to my plate. If there is a next time, I will gladly have my doula again, encourage friends to call/text/message but will limit visits until the next day! Also, green juice and smoothies from friends who knew the power of keeping inflammation at bay for the surgery recovery were so helpful!

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

You just did one of the hardest things that will ever be asked of you. Give yourself grace as you find your new routine and drop expectations that don’t fit your new life. With that said, it’s ok to grieve those expectations that didn’t happen surrounding your birth. Be excited about all the special moments surrounding *your* story!

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

It has solidified the idea that flexibility is a strength. Life doesn’t always fit my plans, and sometimes that’s for the better! I also have so much confidence in what I am capable of. If I can go through that, I can take on the next challenges that come along with parenthood!
