C-Section Birth Stories: Katie Walker
1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):
It was really the last option I had. I was in labor for 18 hours total and pushed for 2.5 hours straight. But after 2 hours, my doctor informed me that it was not likely to happen on its own and there's probably something that was keeping my daughter from coming out. I was so exhausted and there were no other positions or options that would've made a difference. So I said let's go with plan B and do the c-section.
2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:
From what I remember, how fast everything seemed to go. I kept my eyes closed 95% of the time trying to process what was happening to me. I just remembered the anesthesiologist asking me if I felt any pain and upping the pain killers. Then all at once, the doctor said “a lot of pressure” and I passed out.
3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:
My husband was my number one supporter. From the time we said to go to plan B to today, making sure I feel good physically and mentally. The first thing he told me was it wasn't my fault that a c-section was happening and as soon as he was able, he was at my side in the operating room telling me that he was there holding my hand and telling me everything was going to be okay. He was also the first to tell me she was out.
4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:
Even though things didn't go the way you expected, the takeaway of it is no matter what, you still have your gorgeous bundle of joy. Even though you may not be happy with your scar at times, it's a great reminder of the beautiful child you brought into this world.
5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:
It took me a while to accept that I had to have a c-section, and for my next child, I'll have to have another. But having one has given me a different outlook on life. The scar that was left motivates me every day to be healthier. It's a longer recovery process but it gave me a chance to reflect on how I want my lifestyle to be moving forward. I want to be a strong role model for my daughter and show her that no matter what life throws at you, with the support of people around you, that you can overcome any obstacles.
