C-Section Birth Stories: Marcela Poidevin

1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

I had very painful prodromal back labor for three days with my first son. I was almost 41 weeks so we agreed to induce. After 13 hours of active labor, my body stopped making progress after 9 centimeters of dilation. My son was also in a posterior position and never fully effaced. After days of trying, we had no choice but to rush to the operating room to save my little boy who was in distress. He was rushed to the NICU where he spent three days for the liquids in his lungs. Because of my history, we decided to schedule a c-section for my second son. However, he had different plans. Unlike his brother, he decided to make his entrance into the world early at almost 39 weeks. I had contractions for 24 hours before heading to the hospital for his c-section birth.

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

I think my biggest surprise was actually learning to honestly and purely admire what my body was capable of experiencing and accomplishing. Both experiences were completely different. I never thought I could be so terrified out of my mind and at the same time experience the most beautiful rush of emotions covered in joy and love, knowing that life truly is a miracle. Love truly conquered all my fears once I heard their cries for the first time.

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

My husband was my rock both times, I wouldn’t have been able to do any of it without him by my side. God works in mysterious ways and allowed me to see the nurse that never left my side the first time around for my second birth experience. My doctor is one of my favorite humans; she’s full of compassion. The kindness I was lucky enough to experience from the medical team both times made me NOT want to leave the hospital!

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

Trust your body, there is nothing to be ashamed of. All births are uniquely beautiful. Don’t let society or expectations discourage you from feeling proud of your birth(s) experience.

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

It’s important to acknowledge that it is major surgery, and it can be a very scary and vulnerable time. But even at the peak of the struggle(s) you still learn to care for another tiny person. The physical challenges don’t become an obstacle to still nourish and care for the new life that just came out of you!
