C-Section Birth Stories: Morgan Edwards
1. Briefly, please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):
First, let me say it never entered my mind that I would have a c-section. I had been in labor for 36 hours and then went to the hospital at 12 a.m. My water broke at 1:30 a.m. and then I received my epidural at 2:30 a.m. All was well and I was 7 centimeters dilated at 8:00 a.m. Things were going great...until they weren't. I was checked again at 2:00 p.m. and was still 7 centimeters. I knew it was coming. I was still having a lot of nerve pain even with the epidural, I stopped progressing, and there was blood in my urine. So, at 2:45 p.m. they began prepping me for my c-section.
2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:
How quick it was! I was prepped and ready by 3:00 p.m., he was born at 3:16 p.m., and I was out of surgery by 3:30 p.m. So 45 minutes from start to finish! I am also in awe of modern medicine and thankful that the tools and medicine exist that allowed me to safely have my baby.
3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:
My healthcare team was AWESOME! No joke, I actually enjoyed my time in the hospital. My husband was a rockstar taking on all the jobs because I could hardly move at all. He swaddled, changed, fed, clothed the baby, all of it, and still ran home to get more things since we would be there for 5 days.
4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:
Oh gosh! I am a new c-section mom BUT the pain is gone and I am almost back to semi-normal. I guess it would be to listen to your body. I tried to do too much, too soon and sometimes the pain from recovering hurt so bad. When they tell you to rest and take it easy do just that! It is hard, especially with a newborn but just take it one day at a time and ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT!
5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:
It has made me stronger mentally in realizing that I can't do it all and that it’s okay to ask for and accept help. I guess in a way, it made me stronger by humbling me quite a bit and realizing that it really does take a village.
