C-Section Birth Stories: Samantha Newhall
1. Briefly, please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):
I had to have an emergency c-section with my first daughter. It was a horrible experience, I was very nauseous, and I didn’t get to hold my baby because she was having trouble breathing on her own. With my second daughter, I wanted to really enjoy every moment because I felt robbed of the first experience. My doctor allowed my friend, who is a photographer, to photograph the birth. So along with embracing every moment, my second daughter was born. My friend was able to capture the miracle I couldn’t see behind the curtain. I enjoyed every aspect.
2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:
Because I had two c-sections, what surprised me the most was how easy it was the second time. I have anxiety and I was so stressed out during the first pregnancy. The second time around, because everything was explained to me, I knew what to expect and I could simply enjoy my baby.
3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:
I was very supported by family and friends. They knew I just had major surgery so they did everything they could to help with my recovery.
4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:
My advice is to relax. The baby will come and your life will change forever. Enjoy every moment.
5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:
I never really faced any negativity in having c-sections. I think I did grow through my first c-section. I tried really hard to have a vaginal, unmedicated delivery, but that wasn’t in the stars for me. I had to allow myself to change what I had set my mind to for the baby. Afterward, I wish I would’ve done the c-section sooner, instead of putting my baby and myself through 3 days of labor. I proved to myself that I would do what I had to for my baby and I think that’s what being a mother is. Being strong for your child.
