C-Section Birth Stories: Amanda Zubricki

1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

We found out about our baby’s condition at 16 weeks pregnant. She had a large omphalocele that would require a c-section for a safe delivery. We scheduled a c-section for 38 weeks. Fast forward to 36 weeks, my water broke with no labor symptoms. Just three days prior, my ultrasound showed she was still breech anyway.

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

How overwhelming and uncomfortable it was. I was prepared for a c-section birth but nothing prepares you for what’s to come. I’m a profound deaf mom that relies on lip-reading and there were so many people in the room, because of my daughter’s health condition. I was cold, naked, completely shut down. I was more nervous about my daughter’s safety than mine.

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

I had samples of the communicator masks, which is a medical mask with a clear window that allows for easy communication for the deaf and hard of hearing community. My anesthesiologist was so nice about it and he wore one and so did my husband. They both kept me calm and it was reassuring. I can’t imagine feeling shut down and not able to know what’s going on. They went through every step with me and I was amazed to be able to hold my daughter before they whisked her away to the children’s hospital next door.

Afterward, they were nice enough to let me stay five days to recover so I could see her next door. It gave me the encouragement to get up and move quickly so I could recover but also rest enough knowing she was in good hands next door in NICU.

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

No matter the circumstances, always speak up and let them know your needs and goals. Mine was to be as comfortable as possible and to be able to hold my daughter. You’re laying your life on the line and all that matters is the safety of your child. You still delivered your baby and it was done in the best way possible.

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

I had no idea how badass women are for having to have a cesarean birth. I’m amazed at myself for going through that and have a scar to show it. You guys are rockstars!

It was a struggle not to be able to move freely. It’s major surgery and all you can think about is your child, not yourself. I would do it all over again.
