C-Section Birth Stories: Emilee Musumeci

1. Briefly, please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. I had my heart set on a vaginal, epidural-free delivery. I was lucky enough to have a generally easy pregnancy so that didn't seem like such a crazy goal. I even had a music playlist for each stage of labor. That being said, at 40 weeks pregnant, my chill babe was measuring around 9 pounds with no sign of wanting to make an entrance into this world. I received a membrane strip to get things going and ended up dilating to around 3 to 4 centimeters over the course of a couple of days. At first, the doctors assured me that this was a great sign and I should go into active labor any day. Unfortunately, that was not the case. My body would not progress and after another check, I was only 2 centimeters dilated! I am thankful for the amazing team of doctors that discussed the options with my husband and me. They saw the risks of induction and expressed their concern about the stress the baby may be under if I attempted a vaginal delivery. After lots of deliberation and even some tears, we decided to schedule a c-section at 41 weeks and 6 days. We are blessed with a beautiful, healthy baby girl that measured 9 pounds 15 ounces and 21 1/2 inches long.

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

I was surprised by the guilt I felt for having a cesarean delivery. I felt like my body failed. I was not able to experience labor or the pain of contractions. I did not get the opportunity to "try" and deliver my baby in the way that I felt was best. What I now know is that the only best birth plan is the one that brings a healthy baby into this world!

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

I am so thankful for the support and love I received from family and friends. The recovery is not easy and to have their help was so beneficial to me and my little one. I also felt like the team of doctors and nurses were very honest. They provided me with all the information I needed to know about the process, in order to make me feel more comfortable.

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

Don't hold on to what you felt like your birth story was supposed to be. Don't dwell on what you felt like you missed out on. I still have to tell myself that I did not fail, I triumphed. For nine months my body was no longer my own. I shared my body with this amazing little person! My body solely nourished that little one and brought her into the world. My body still gave birth and I still have a story to share.

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

Having a scheduled c-section allowed me to put my selfishness aside. When you know what is best for your child you do it. My life is now 100% dedicated to this little one. If I was faced with the choice again I wouldn't change a thing. My scar is a reminder of what I sacrificed for my baby. It is a reminder that I would do anything to keep her safe, happy, and healthy. It is a badge I wear as a c-section strong mother.
