C-Section Birth Stories: Cassandra Blake
1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):
I was induced on August 31st, 5 days after my due date. After 5 days of being induced, taking pills to soften my cervix, Pitocin, a foley bulb, having my water pop, and 3 days of labor, I dilated to between 8 and 9 centimeters and my body stopped there. I was told I could try to push, but that may cause spinal damage to my daughter. A c-section was strongly recommended.
2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:
The recovery after, both physically and emotionally. I cried a lot, feeling like I didn’t get to participate in my delivery. I’m also still physically recovering 3 1/2 months later.
3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:
The support was amazing. My healthcare team was super supportive. One Labor & Delivery nurse bought us sushi (my favorite food) after our daughter was born. My hubby changed all the diapers initially, my sister came over so I could sleep, friends and family sent meals, etc. The best emotional support was talking to family and friends who had c-sections and coming to terms with how strong our bodies really are.
4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:
Find support from other moms who’ve had c-sections; this was so helpful for me. It’s okay to cry and process what you went through.
5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:
My body has done something I never imagined it would. I can’t believe how I was able to care for my daughter after such intense surgery. C-section moms are so much stronger than I ever realized.
