C-Section Birth Stories: Charlotte Foy

1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):

I knew from my first midwife appointment that this was going to be the best option for me. They quickly arranged an appointment with a consultant to go through everything with me. I struggled massively with antenatal depression and I knew not being in control at the end would fuel my anxiety. If I could've guaranteed a safe, vaginal birth then I would've opted for that but you never know what is going to happen. I couldn't deal with the fact that I was not in control of potential complications 'down there' or the safety of my baby. I knew I would struggle mentally if I had to be induced. Knowing that I made the choice to have a c-section and take full responsibility for my recovery empowered me - I felt in control of my choice. I knew what day my baby was coming and that helped me enjoy the rest of my pregnancy and to be prepared.

2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:

How smoothly it went. I was admitted at 7 am and in theatre (operating room) by 9:30 am. The whole process was over and I was in recovery before midday. The surgical team, midwives, doctors, nurses, and mental health team were excellent on that day. I felt justified in my choice and they took good care of me. The first night was hard, there was pain, and a lot of hormones but you are amazed that you produced a tiny human and that they came out safely. The hardest part for me was that my husband had to leave after I went back to the ward so I felt a bit alone but I knew I needed to rest anyway.

3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:

My husband has been excellent. He fully supported my choice and so did my friends and family. He looked after me and our new baby for the first couple of days after I was home. I knew I wanted to go home the next day and I achieved my goal as my recovery was straightforward. This did mean I had to rely on him fully to help me a few times but I was happier being in my home environment and having him around was very calming for me and the baby.

4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:

You've done an amazing job carrying your baby for nine months and keeping them safe. How you bring them into the world is no one’s choice except yours, you have to do what's right for you and your baby. No one can judge you. Yes, it will be hard but then caring for a newborn is a whole different life-changing event so you have to do what you believe is right. Also, take all the pain relief you're offered and don't forget to take it at home, you'll quickly know why.

5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:

I felt in control of my birth plan, my baby and I were safe. I struggled throughout pregnancy with depression, nausea, and literally, every other symptom; for me it was tough. Knowing I was regaining a little bit of control over what happened to my body at the end was comforting for me. I fully accepted the risks/possible surgical complications as this was my choice. One week post-c-section and I feel great, the hardest part for me now is taking it easy!
