C-Section Birth Stories: Rebecca Bruce
1. Please share the circumstances that led to your c-section birth(s):
I had a breech baby, which means I could have had a procedure to "flip" the baby or had a scheduled c-section. After having two previous miscarriages, I felt lucky to be pregnant with a healthy baby and didn't want to risk anything having a procedure so that I could “have the birth I thought I wanted". Therefore, I decided on a c-section. I thought mine was going to be planned, however after working a busy shift in my emergency room, my little one had other plans and my water broke that night at 2:10 am, but 5:56 Chloe was born and we were able to meet our little girl.
2. What surprised you the most about having a c-section?:
I am an Emergency Room Physician Assistant, I am Type A, and like to be in charge. This helps me professionally but could have hindered my birthing experience. Luckily, I found an OBGYN who I trusted and promised she would be at my delivery. I texted her at 2:10 am when my water broke and I got a response by 2:13 am. I was a lucky patient. What surprised me the most was giving up control. For some reason, in my mind, a vaginal delivery gave the momma control of the how and when (not sure why I thought this way) but the fear of a c-section to me was a fear of giving up that control. Once I realized I was having this baby via c-section and this would be our unique birthing experience and I decided to let the doctors be doctors and I be the patient for once, I had a memorable, fantastic experience. To be truthful, if we were lucky enough to get pregnant again I would likely have another c-section.
3. What kind of support do you feel you received (from friends, family, healthcare team) after your c-section(s)?:
My husband was my biggest support. He knew I really wanted a vaginal delivery and how disappointed I was so he did everything in his power to help out and care for both Chloe and me. He knew I had just had major abdominal surgery but he also knew that I wanted to be part of everything post-delivery 24/7.
4. What’s your #1 piece of advice/encouragement for a new c-section mom?:
To remember that THIS IS YOUR JOURNEY! Remember that a healthy birthing experience is the only kind that matters. That a healthy baby and a healthy momma are key to a successful delivery. I would also say that my one piece of advice is to remember that you have made it this far on the journey and that the prize is in sight, remember that shortly you will get to snuggle with your little one weather a c-section or vaginal birth, you have made it!
5. How do you believe having a c-section birth(s) made you stronger?:
I think it made me realize that this is just the start of learning how to adapt from the plan I had in my mind. In my mind, I was laying on the bed, pushing, having contractions, and having a vaginal delivery. My plans changed and I learned to adapt. This is only the beginning of motherhood for me and learning how to adapt, be flexible, and be okay with the outcome has helped make me a stronger MOMMA! I couldn’t prouder to show off my c-section scar and to tell everyone about my experience.
